Cereals depend on silicon (Si)-based defences to fight off herbivores. Using altitudinal ranges in the East African highlands as ecological surrogates for inferring climate change, it was shown that Si concentrations in soil and maize decreased with altitude. This was attributed, in part, to low temperatures at high altitudes, which negatively affected Si assimilation by maize. Experiments showed that B. fusca was more susceptible to Si than C. partellus. Hence the predominance of B. fusca in the highlands and of C. partellus in the lowlands could be partly explained by altitudinal differences in Si concentrations in maize plants. Therefore, a rise in temperature due to climate change should enhance the plants’ Si assimilation and as a result C. partellus might move into the higher altitudes and increasingly displace B. fusca.</p> </div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/286" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">vkamau</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 04/24/2017 - 13:39</span> <div class="field field--name-field-lang-enfr field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Language</div> <div class="field__item">en</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Author</div> <div class="field__item">Calatayud, P.-A.<br /> Njuguna, E.<br /> Mwalusepo, S.<br /> Gathara, M.<br /> Okuku, G.<br /> Kibe, A.<br /> Musyoka, B.<br /> Williamson, D.<br /> Ong’amo, G.<br /> Juma, G.<br /> Johansson, T.<br /> Subramanian, S.<br /> Gatebe, E.<br /> Le Ru, B.</div> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/9" hreflang="en">Other Information</a> <a href="/taxonomy/term/770" hreflang="en">Eastern Afromontane</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/771" hreflang="en">Altitude</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">climate change</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/772" hreflang="en">Temperature</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/773" hreflang="en">Silicon</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/774" hreflang="en">Maize</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/775" hreflang="en">Lepidopteran stem borers</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/776" hreflang="en">Chilo partellus</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/777" hreflang="en">Busseola fusca</a> Mon, 24 Apr 2017 13:39:58 +0000 vkamau 715 at https://fornis.net Announcement of New Funding: DFID-NERC Future Climate for Africa https://fornis.net/node/553 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Announcement of New Funding: DFID-NERC Future Climate for Africa</span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p> The Department for International Development (DFID) and <strong>Natural Environment Research Council </strong>(NERC) announce new funding of £20m for climate research in Africa. The 5 year programme ‘<strong>Future Climate for Africa’</strong> (FCFA) will support research to better understand climate variability and change across sub-Saharan Africa. Its focus will be on advancing scientific knowledge, understanding and prediction of African climate variability and change, together with support for better integration of science into longer-term decision making, leading to improved climate risk management and the protection of lives and livelihoods. </p> <p> <br /> In the second half of April 2014, DFID/NERC will launch a global open <strong>Announcement of Opportunity for world-leading multi-disciplinary research consortia </strong>to improve scientific understanding and prediction of extreme weather and climate change in sub-Saharan Africa and enhance the use of this information in real decisions. FCFA places the concept of Climate Services at its core and will specifically target sectors involved in longer-term decision making, such as infrastructure, water resources management, energy and urban planning. The partnership between DFID and NERC reflects the triple focus of the programme on scientific excellence, achieving impact and strengthening scientific capacity and international collaboration. The programme will take a co-production approach, providing information and services that are designed and tested with practitioners to inform real decisions. It will also place equal emphasis on extracting more value from existing climate information as generating new information and will draw on multiple disciplines to do this.<br /> Further information is available at: <a href="http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/funded/programmes/fcfa/">http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/funded/programmes/fcfa/</a> </p> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/3" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">sbritwum</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Tue, 04/15/2014 - 16:52</span> <div class="field field--name-field-nsource field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News source</div> <div class="field__item">Dr Helen Pearce, Science Programmes Officer, Natural Environment Research Council</div> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/5" hreflang="en">Forests and Climate Change</a> <a href="/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">climate change</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/258" hreflang="en">africa</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/662" hreflang="en">DFID-NERC</a> Tue, 15 Apr 2014 16:52:45 +0000 sbritwum 553 at https://fornis.net Job Opportunities - UN-REDD Programme https://fornis.net/node/548 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Job Opportunities - UN-REDD Programme</span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p> The UN-REDD Programme is hiring,  please see vacancies at <a href="http://www.un-redd.org ">www.un-redd.org </a> </p> <ul> <li> Programme Officer - REDD+ Academy, P4 (Nairobi, Kenya) </li> <li> Regional Technical Advisor for Congo Basin, P4 (Nairobi, Kenya) </li> <li> REDD+ Safeguards Specialist and Inter-Agency Coordinator, P4 (Geneva, Switzerland) </li> <li> Programme Officer for Asia-Pacific, P3 (Bangkok, Thailand) </li> </ul> <p> Deadline for applications is 25 March 2014. </p> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/3" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">sbritwum</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Wed, 03/05/2014 - 16:40</span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-contactinfo field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Contact info</div> <div class="field__item"><p> <strong>Tim Christophersen</strong> <br /> Senior Programme Officer, Forests and Climate Change<br /> United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<br /> Tel.+254 20 762 5723 </p> <p> <span>Website. </span><a href="http://www.un-redd.org/"><span><span>www.un-redd.org</span></span></a></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-nsource field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News source</div> <div class="field__item">owner-REDDannouncements@newlistsvr0.unon.org</div> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/5" hreflang="en">Forests and Climate Change</a> <a href="/taxonomy/term/653" hreflang="en">Job Vacancy. Increased droughts and forest fire have impacts not only on forests and trees, but also on the life of millions of people. “There is a strong need to gain a deeper understanding of the various impacts climate change already has and will continue to have, and of adequate mitigation and adaptation measures“, says Victor Agyeman, Chairman of the Forestry Research Network of Sub-Saharan Africa (FORNESSA) and co-organizer of the First IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress “Forests and Trees: Serving the People of Africa and the World“. </p> </div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/3" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">sbritwum</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Mon, 06/25/2012 - 10:03</span> <div class="field field--name-field-resp field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Responsible party</div> <div class="field__item">IUFRO &amp; FORNESSA</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-upload field--type-file field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><table data-striping="1"> <thead> <tr> <th>Attachment</th> <th>Size</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr class="odd"> <td> <span class="file file--mime-application-pdf file--application-pdf"> <a href="https://fornis.net/sites/default/files/documents/climate_resilience%20_Press_release.pdf" type="application/pdf; length=313191">climate_resilience _Press_release.pdf</a></span> </td> <td>305.85 KB</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/5" hreflang="en">Forests and Climate Change</a> <a href="/taxonomy/term/422" hreflang="en">forest research</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/421" hreflang="en">climate resilience</a> / <a href="/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">climate change</a> Mon, 25 Jun 2012 10:03:02 +0000 sbritwum 420 at https://fornis.net Combatting Climate Change Comprehensively https://fornis.net/node/418 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Combatting Climate Change Comprehensively</span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Description</div> <div class="field__item"><p> A recent study conducted in two forest-dependent areas in Africa emphasizes cross-sectoral planning as a key element in implementing any effective climate change adaptation strategy. </p> </div> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span lang="" about="/user/3" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">sbritwum</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden">Wed, 06/20/2012 - 16:19</span> <div class="field field--name-field-resp field--type-string-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Responsible party</div> <div class="field__item">Kenya Forestry Research Institute</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-upload field--type-file field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><table data-striping="1"> <thead> <tr> <th>Attachment</th> <th>Size</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr class="odd"> <td> <span class="file file--mime-application-pdf file--application-pdf"> <a href="https://fornis.net/sites/default/files/documents/Spotlight%208%20Africa%20adaptation%20study.pdf" type="application/pdf; length=176941">Spotlight 8 Africa adaptation study.pdf</a></span> </td> <td>172.79 KB</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div> </div> <a href="/taxonomy/term/5" hreflang="en">Forests and Climate Change</a> <a href="/taxonomy/term/27" hreflang="en">climate change</a> Wed, 20 Jun 2012 16:19:04 +0000 sbritwum 418 at https://fornis.net
